A sausage sizzle, also called an “Aussie Taco” by foodies, experts and connoisseurs, is a popular meal offered at most of the Bunnings Warehouse stores in Australia (Straya, mate), where standard sausages are grilled and served on slices of bread with onions and sauce.
You go for a screwdriver, you come back with a sausage sizzle and a screwdriver.
The Evolution Of the “Aussie Taco”: The “Kanga Banga Sanga”
A kanga banga sanga, or “Kanga sizzle”, in my opinion, is the evolution of that. In plan english, this means “Kangaroo Sausage Sandwich” and here is a recipe for a perfect kanga banga sanga for your next Australia Day shindig:
Main ingredients:
- Kangaroo sausages (kanga bangas)
- Sandwich slices (sangas)
- Brown onion
- Tomato/barbecue dead horse
Cooking instructions:
- Preheat the barbie to medium-high heat
- Slice the onions and grill them (I don’t recommend eating them raw with skin)
- Grill the bangas, turning occasionally, until they are cooked
- While the bangas get cooked, slightly warm the sanga slices on the barbie
- When the bangas are cooked, place them on the sanga slices
- Add some onion on top of them
- Squeeze tomato dead horse all over the thing
- Serve and enjoy!
Anything extra?
You may also want to consider adding other toppings or condiments such as mustard, ketchup, or mayonnaise. Feel free to adapt to your own preferences. Each to their own, whatever floats your boat. I will allow it.
